Here's the first of a new mini series of how to play bass to Rolling Stones bass lines. This is Jumping Jack Flash.

BIll Wyman is an interesting bass player - because his lines are much subtler than they sound - he's a great user of space, and great at using 'slurred' or 'hammered' notes to add colour into his lines.

Jumping Jack Flash is a common tune played by bar room type bands...so it's a good one to have in your repertoire. (Although note that I've taught the lesson in Bb as on the original version - but all the bands I've ever played it in have played it in B).

  • The bass on the Get Yer Ya Ya's Out live version is very similar to the way all the bar bands cover it... = following the guitar riff..

  • @wimeising I've not heard that....I'll check it out. Following the guitar riff is probably the way to go unless yo've got two or three guitarists IMHO.

  • Could you play Sympathy For The Devil? I'd like to learn it........

  • @Chatmire72 I was originally gonna do that in this series of tutorials - but when I started transcribing it I quickly realized that it was a complex bass line and too advanced for a lot of my subscribers. (it's a wicked line - I understand Keith played it).

  • i gave up when u stated doing that E falt stuff and not telling us the threats

  • @ImWhinnie Sorry man - there should be enough info in the video to enable you to get trhough it.

  • I play the studio version on the bottom 2 strings only. It sounds very close to the original then.

  • @Chatmire72 Yeah I heard that AFTER I posted the video! (Hangs head in shame - I just assumed it was Bill.) Keith also played the totally wicked line on Sympathy for the Devil. Very cool line!

  • Keith Richards actually played this; but you are THE MAN!!!!!
