Ethan Nadelmann, founder and executive director of the Drug Policy Alliance, discusses the political challenges involved with a 2012 ballot initiative that would legalize adult-use cannabis in California. He spoke at the California NORML marijuana policy reform conference in Berkeley, Jan. 29, 2011. DPA was a major proponent of Proposition 19; for more info, go to http://drugpolicy.org.

  • his whole argument is ohhhh noooo the kids think about the kids... do you know how easy it is to get pot? you know how hard it is to get liquor?

  • @brnin8ed His point involves the ongoing debate about whether adult-use cannabis should be made legal for those 18 and up or 21 and up. Logically, 18 makes more sense given the relative health risks of cannabis when compared with tobacco, already legal at 18. But Californians are more likely to support the 21-and-up age limit used for alcohol. Opponents say that legalization will increase (not decrease) youth access, a message that doesn't make sense to us but resonates with voters nonetheless.
