Before Mayor D of Chicago destroyed Meigs we flew there on May 3, 2002. It was a beautiful day, watch landing over the top of a large yacht on approach to 36. Plane is a Piper Archer II Tail# N38120.

  • You must have been delighted to hear mayor "D" is on his way out. Hopefully this will mean some positive changes for avaition and other areas.

  • I cannot wait until this ^$&#@ of a politician leaves office, I can only say WHAT TOOK SO LONG!

  • Nice video! I miss working the tower at Meigs...what a beautiful airport it was and a lot of fun to work (minus the political BS). I left prior to the midnight raid from Daley...what a waste of space it is now.

This was the first landing I made there. We stayed a night watched the opening night of the first Spider Man Movie, ate in really fancy restaurants, and spent a lot of money at the American Girl Store. We did this about every 6-8 months until they tore it up. We actually were there just days before the event took place.

I decided I'm not going back to Chicago until the people of Chicago fire the mayor. They don't know what they lost. I take my trips to Pigeon Forge now.

  • @c172kid If you believe that bull about safety you are SO uninformed, and you should SERIOUSLY get educated and stop listening to the media outlets. Daily broke the law, violated contract with the Federal government, took money for O'hare in a deal that would keep Meigs open, and there is NO credible evidence of any safety issues, and there never has been! The airport is too small to have any planes big enough that can seriously damage anything when they hit say a building. What a joke!

  • @joemccormick Yeah. Mayor/King/Dictator Daily decided, for whatever reason, that Meigs had to go. In direct violation of several laws governing public policy, air traffic, and transportation safety, he ordered a crew of several bull dozers to be trucked into the airport literally under cover of darkness and in total secrecy bull dozed runway 18-36. The next morning all of the pilots woke up to find themselves without a runway and the FAA authorized takeoff from the taxiway a week later.

  • Carving X's on the runways was such an atrocious thing to do. I never got to go to Meigs but it does sound like it was loved by many people.

  • @fordairport He doesn't hate aviation... You obviously know nothing about the fact because he was pressured to close the airport because of safety concerns. Also every story about Mrs. D wanting the place changed to a park is also bullshit.

  • its always the special airports which become subject to closure with almost no sturdy reason. same here in germany with berlin tempelhof. an absolutely interesting great city airport with a huge potential and an important historic background. in german we have a word which describes such a mindless political behavior perfectly: aktionismus - in english maybe "doing things for the sake of doing things" - just to cover up political incapability. such a shame!

  • They closed down Meigs!? Someone explain lol. I was really looking forward to hopefully someday doing a cross country there...hmph.

  • what an amazing airport, i miss it alot :(

  • It was a beautiful little airport...........
