On Dec. 13, 2010 over 160 mm of rain falls in someparts of Charlotte County, New Brunswick. By the next afternoon, the Magaguadavic River was rising fast. Homes were flooded and destroyed in the Bonny River-Second Falls area. The Canal Covered Bridge at Canal was facing the possiblity of being sweep away as water rushing into Lake Utopia.

  • Did the bridge survive? Kudos to the crew who worked to cut the windows. We will be donating, hoping others do too.

  • @outdoorchick1 - yes, the bridge survived. Check out update No. 2.

  • I've never seen anything quite so retarded as cutting those "windows"

  • @wsogft - the "windows" come from a century of storm experience. The water preasure rushing against the side of the bridge will be deminished somewhat if it is able to flow through the bridge. Most bridges are destroyed by the rushing water and debris, not the rising water since the bridge weights close to 90 tons and won't float. Some bridges have the "windows" made in the design.
