  • The annotated Sherlock Holmes is an absolute thing of beauty! It will be nice to see Lovecraft get the same treatment. I know your opinion of the recent Robert Downey Jr. Sherlock Holmes films, but I'd like to know if you have seen any of the recent episodes of "Sherlock" on PBS...and if so, if you have any opinion?

Also, have you ever read any of the Sax Rohmer Fu Manchu novels or short stories? I'd die for an collected, complete and annotated version of those stories!

    Thanks for sharing!

  • @tfc4hf I love British murder mysteries--even when they are written by Yanks, such as the Charles Todd novels. I have not watched the Downey Jr. Holmes films because I know that I will abhor them. I have watched a few of the Sherlock PBS episodes and finds them effective and interesting.

  • As Guillermo del Toro director of Pan's Labyrinth once said: If you become friend of the Adversity of life, then your life would be a lot much easier. You are going to get to a point where Adversity becomes like an addicted drug.

  • @Aldebaren100 I must say I am similarly excited for more annotated Lovecraft. S T Joshi's annotated collections were very much enriched by them. I have the Lovecraft Lexicon as part of my bookshelf now, and The Dream World of H P Lovecraft by Tyson was also very educational.

It might be a bit strange but I enjoy more technical information about the books I read. Like you I don't know if I agree with 'death of the author'. Critics mught think it adds a layer of pedantry, but..I don't much mind!

  • @Aldebaren100 He's probably the reason half the horror section is Lovecraft or Lovecraftian! I went there over three weekends and bought armfuls of books, and have been saturated in Lovecraftian literature the past few weeks. I take them to work and try to convince other people to give them as shot. They were the only thing keeping me sane during the training phase. Ironic, in hindsight...

So anyway I will go to the Singapore National Library to see if I can't find some of S T Joshi's books.

  • For me the certainty of death is what makes life's value infinite. Life is finite, but that doesn't mean we can't have a bit of fun :P

I found some Lovecraft collections and anthologies of modern weird fiction, and The Fungal Stain was one of the stories featured! Sadly the guy at the information desk told me they didn't have anything by S T Joshi (and he would know because he's a fan of Lovecraft himself and constantly pushed for them to stock more of it!)
