  • @busessuck1 ... I have his 1967 album (vinyl) called 'Joe Callicott ' - he sounds exactly like he did in the 1920s =) -George Mitchell recorded him in l967 and also recorded RL Burnside (acoustic) - Fantastic!

  • .....his l967 album (George Mitchell found him in Nesbitt and recorded him) has his songs + he sounds just like his pre-war recordings.

  • "Ain't Gonna Lie To You" is now one of my all time favourite albums, I just love the rawness of it. A little story - maybe true, maybe not...

Last year, when I'd still not heard of this man, I bought a Harmony Archtone H1215 guitar from a guy who restores vintage American guitars. It came with the story that the guy he bought it from said it had belonged to Joe. To cut it short, the guitar on the cover of "Ain't gonna lie" is now in my house along with a vinyl copy of the album.

  • He's awesome and under rated ... going up to north mississippi to visit his grave, his marker and hope to find Kenny Brown to hear some stories 'bout this cool musician.

  • It's a pity,at the time of writing this,there are only 357 views.

This is by far the best version I've ever heard of this song.

It absolutely trounces, obliterates and makes all the other versions sound silly, some even pathetic by comparison.

The Johnny Cash 'show tune' attempt at it is a joke.

I heard this version about six years ago and have never been able to get it out of my head,it's beautiful.

Joe's voice is so poignant and lilting it kills me every time.

  • @busessuck1 Joe's extant sides (his 2 plus the 2 he cut with Garfield Akers) all appear on "Son House & the Great Delta Blues Singers." It appears a third Callicott side, Mississippi Boll Weevil Blues, was recorded but never released. I don't believe it has ever seen the light of day.

  • simply superb!!

  • anyone know where i could find this cat's pre war recordings?

  • Fantastic Rural-Bluesman
