THIS IS A FULL VIDEO FROM BEGINNING TO END, SHOWING ALL STEPS.

NOTE: EBAY USERS - BE WARNED THAT PAYPAL AND EBAY BUYER PROTECTION EXPIRES 45 DAYS AFTER THE TRANSACTION, YOU MUST FILE A DISPUTE IF YOU HAVE ANY PROBLEMS, OTHERWISE PAYPAL AND EBAY WILL NOT HELP YOU!!
I KNOW THIS BECAUSE I GOT RIPPED OFF, AND THERE'S NOTHING THEY WILL DO!
I HOPE YOU READ THIS, AND I HAVE SAVED YOU FROM THE SAME MISTAKE.

The battery stated to work with a 3GS is of part number "APN 616-0435", refer to quote below from ifixit. Apparently, the version must be equal to, or less than the part number of your stock battery. The only way to find this out is to open up the phone, find the APN of your battery, and order that replacement part, exact part number. My part number is 616-0433, but 0435 is also stated to be compatible with all versions, so that's probably a safe bet.

I've created this video to show you everything you need to know about replacing the iphone battery, and then some.

I've only fast forwarded small sections, and jumped very little, so that you can see all that's required to replace the battery, you'll also see which items you'll struggle on, this helps you understand the entire operation.
Hope it helps.

Also, I must stress that replacement batteries out there won't work with iOS 4.x+, the one I received had problems, make sure it works first, before buying and installing.

Also, I didn't say, but don't use the case opener tool, it destroys the rubber gasket between the glass and metal bezel; you must use the suction cup method of opening to avoid damage.

Cheers.

Quote: "This is something we are looking into. As far as we can tell, this is caused by the battery and the logic board. With newer builds of the iPhone 3GS, it appears that they come with a battery with an Apple part number (APN) of 616-0433, 616-0434, or 616-0435. All 3 of those part number were succesful in updating to iOS 4.0 with the "newer" 3GS. These batteries have to be replaced with a battery of the same part number. If you try to use a battery with a part number of 616-0428 or 616-0431 on a newer 3GS, it will give you the "Error 29" message every time.

We have not figured out how to determine which battery you need other than taking the battery out and looking at the part number.

Contact iFixit if you bought a 3GS battery from us and are getting the "Error 29" message. iFixit has started selling a battery that will be compatible with all 3GS models. It's APN 616-0435."

  • How is your battery doing now ? did you update to ios 5 ? i just got a battery apn # 0435 and the stock one is 0431 , I did the whole process of opening up the phone swaping bat and after 1 day , I realized the new battery was worse than the stock one , stock one is 1 to almost 2 years old , do you think my new battery is defective or what ?

  • @jxtreme586

I honestly didn't notice any difference between the new battery and the old battery.

I tested it on the bench with a computerized tester and it read 1000mAh in the old battery, and 1200mAh in the new battery, so there isn't really much difference between new and old.

It's most likely the firmware or software running in the background causing a decrease in battery life, some have said the new firmware drains the battery fast.

    I stayed in iOS4.

I think it's your firmware causing it.

  • Will it work when I upgrade it with the new updates?

  • @CrucialGamer

This video was made at the time iOS 4.3 was out, this APN part number was required for an upgrade to 4.3, but I'm not sure about anything newer.

I assume it would work with 5, since the APN matches, but I can't confirm that it's successful.

I would suggest NOT upgrading, unless you're able to put your OLD apple stock battery back in(Worst case)

I tested my old battery, and it had 1000mAh out of the 1200mAh stock capacity, so it's not all that bad to put the old one back in.

  • U r the man good video! Where I can get battery model before I buy it? My 3GS 32gb can I buy it on amazon?

  • @meazi01

Glad you enjoyed the video. You have to open up your phone to find out which battery you have, then make sure you order the same part APN.

I ordered mine off ebay, shipped from China, about $6.

Search ebay for the part number: 616-0433, 616-0434, or 616-0435

You'll need to take your phone apart to find out, then put it back together, shouldn't take you too long, this video has very little forwarding and it's only about 12 mins long.

    Just follow along and pause.

    Cheers.

    David.

hahaha, I was wondering when someone would say something! Only 2543 views later does someone say something, I'm surprised!

I was thinking it's difficult to video tape a how-to video, always trying to get the camera at the right view, why not put the camera in between my eyes so it records a FPS type view? So I did it! You know those headlight flash lights? I took the flashlight off and replaced it with a camera instead, worked out pretty well.

    No bad angle here!

    BOOM HEADSHOT!!
