IAVA Founder and Executive Director Paul Rieckhoff testified before the Senate Veterans' Affairs Committee on July 27th at a hearing on "Examining the Lifetime Costs of Supporting the Newest Generation of Veterans." Ahead of large-scale troop withdrawals from Iraq and Afghanistan, the hearing examined the long-term impact of the wars and how the public and private sectors can join forces to support new veterans from their initial transition.

We need metrics. The issue is a lot of veterans detach themselves before suicide. It will be a difficult thing to gauge, but one possible metric could be a check of SSN on death certificates. A system in which all deaths by suicide enters a national registry. It's definitely achievable considering almost all communities are connected in one way or another through the internet.
