Willard Hotel, Washington D.C., USA
31 July 2009
In recognition of their invaluable roles which led to the passage of a bill granting benefits to Filipino World War II veterans, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo conferred Presidential citations to Hawaiian Democratic Senators Daniel Ken Dan Inouye and Daniel Kahikina Akaka at the Willard Hotel.
Senator Daniel Inouye has represented Hawaii in the US Congress since it achieved statehood in 1959, serving as Hawaiis first US Representative and later on as US Senator. He is the third most senior member among the Democrats and the third oldest US Senator.
Democrat Senator Daniel Akaka, on the other hand, is the fourth oldest member of the US Senate and the first senator of native Hawaiian ancestry with Chinese descent.
