Octopus Tool Use: The World's Smartest Invertebrate.

The octopus is widely regarded as the worlds smartest invertebrate, and now a new study adds evidence to that claim.

Those who work with cephalopods are not surprised; they know how intelligent these creatures are. In fact, we asked two of the Academys biologists about this finding.

Coconut-Carrying Octopus: Tool Use in an Invertebrate

Scientists once thought of tool use as a defining feature of humans. That's until examples of tool use came in from other primates, along with birds and an array of other mammals. Now, a report in the December 14th, 2009 issue of Current Biology, a Cell Press publication, adds an octopus to the growing list of tool users.

  • Some humans used to believe (some still do) that women aren't as intelligent as men, or that some "races" aren't as intelligent as their own. This being the case, it's not hard to understand the prejudice some humans have against recognizing intelligence in other species.

  • @1triggerhappy1

    Oh wow, how original.

  • @1triggerhappy1 Smarter than all non-Americans.

  • @alexlemke also how cool is it, that we can argue like this over a octopus video hehehehehehehe I LOVE YOUTUBE

  • @alexlemke also i didnt mean that 2 was heaps, i didnt go thru any other pages of comments just saw 2 on this page and was wondering why thats all. aussie economy is shitter than usa anyway, may not be in trillions of dollars worth of debt like you guys but for some reason our prime minister is the highest paid in the world and just got a pay rise. mental huh? everyone over here is just riding the fact that our dollar is worth more than yours and buying up big even though they have no money

  • @alexlemke by the rest of the world. i dont blame any single americans but your country is pretty in your face to the rest of the world, biggest super power on earth after all. so to the rest of the world for some reason you all look like idiots. im from new zealand anyway which is even further in the corner of the world. i know australia is shit, i mean we follow you guys into anything no matter if we have a problem with the country or not. you do it, australia does it....

  • @alexlemke yeah but australia is only doing it because usa is, i admit thats dum too. I dont think i need to know much about american economy to know that trillions in debt is not a good thing. i dont need to know anything about your politics to know that wars for oil hidden with regime changes is pretty dum too. the problem with america is that your problems are so big and the rest of the world is always watching so your political and economic mistakes can never go unnoticed ......

  • @thatsmesothere You do realize that Australia is fighting in the exact same countries, right? I think that your political and economic knowledge about the United States is marginal at best, stick to Australia.

Oh and no, I didn't get worked up, a couple comments were double posted. Since when were 2 deleted comments considered "heaps"???

  • @alexlemke hey, how come heaps of your comments are removed? have you been getting worked up ?

  • @alexlemke it WOULD be unreasonable for america to say such a thing, like when they go to another country and say hey we dont like the way you run your country, we can do a better job so here is some war. do you mean like that? when america assumes that foreigners cant run their own coutries?

  • @alexlemke i thought you might like that one hehehehe it is getting pretty mental over there in regards to the country owing money and what not. you know its bad when the aussie dollar is stronger than the US
