Avid is used by all the Studios, it is the industry standard.
HOWEVER, the belief is, that with this next generation of filmmakers all using Final Cut Pro because they can't afford an Avid Bay. Final Cut will become the industry standard.
I have used both, and I can't think of anything I can do on Avid that I can't do on Final Cut
True, Final cut has come a long way in the last few years and most people under 25 would have been taught exclusively on it. Avid still dominates the professional market because it supports hardware accelerated systems. Most studios do all their editing through render farms. While FC is still exclusive to Mac workstations which are fine for basic editing but nowhere near the performance of clustered rendering.
Final cut is superior to any Windows editor? how about Avid? the majority of Hollywood movies are made with Avid systems, it's what's called an "industry standard" Final cut pro is a low end professional editing platform like Premiere and Vegas. It's used mainly by ad agencies and TV production companies because they don't have the budget for real high end systems. Vegas and Premiere are just as good as FC, superior in some ways but inferior in others.
Avid is and always has been the standard and most prominent non-linear editing system in the movie industry. Final cut has taken much of the Avid market in the advertising and independent film industries, but Avid still dominates the professional movie industry, followed by Autodesk.
