Ishmael Beah at the Newark Peace Education Summit in May 2011. Ishmael Beah was born in Sierra Leone in 1980 during the civil war. He was caught in the middle of the civil war as a child soldier and was fortunate to escape to the US in 1998. He lived to share with us his many travails in his book, A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier. Ishmael finished his last two years of high school at the United Nations International School In New York and acquired is B.A. in Political Science from Oberlin College. He is also a member of many NGOs like the Human Rights Watch Children's Rights Division Advisory Committee and has spoken before the United Nations, The Council on Foreign Relations and many others.
