Macushla
(Josephine V. Rowe, Dermot MacMorrough)

Macushla! Macushla!
Your sweet voice is calling,
Calling me softly,
Again and again,
Macushla! Macushla!
I hear it in vain.

Macushla, Macushla,
Your white arms are reaching,
I feel them enfolding,
Caressing me still.
Fling them out from the darkness,
My lost love, Macushla,
Let them find me and bind me
Again, if they will.

Macushla! Macushla!
Your red lips are saying
That death is a dream,
And love is for aye,
Then awaken, Macushla,
Awake from your dreaming,
My blue-eyed Macushla,
Awaken to stay.

The Irish language origins, mo chroí (my heart), mo chuisle (my
pulse; as in 'a chuisle mo chroí", pulse of my heart - in English
we can call someone a "heart throb")

  • I think you meant "acoustic" rather than "a capella". Great sound quality. Thanks!

  • He's perfect!

  • @champagneivy To be more specific, "macushla" isn't technically a word. It's sort of a contraction of the Gaelic "mo chuisle" which means "my pulse", andm just fyi, you pronounce it "muh hooshla".

  • 1. "A capella" does not mean "without a microphone".... it means "with no accompanying music". Therefore, this is not a capella.

    2. "Macushla" is NOT an English word for heart-throb. (See :23-:28). I will assume that this was just a slip of the tongue. I like Rufus Wainwright. "Hallelujiah" is awesome. He shouldn't be singing this song however. Just saying. If he wants to be "authentic" and "traditional" and sing it like they would when it was written (1910), he should, and not milk it.

  • you had me at the trumpet..:)

  • Rufus being Rufus

  • Do people pay to hear this guy?????? Such torture.

  • The only good part of this is the last note, otherwise it's an atrocious rendering of this beautiful song.

  • @poodlekeeper Indeed!

  • You must be joking Joseph Locke and Veron Midgley knock him into a coked hat! this is painful!!!

  • Breathe taking for sure. Wonderful voice!!!

  • WOW!!! that was beautiful!!
