Slings have been in use since the late Stone Age. Still, perhaps the most popular account of a slings use was the biblical battle between David and Goliath. The story is that a shepherd, David, equipped only with a sling, defeated the warrior champion Goliath with a well-aimed shot to the head. The story illustrates two important aspects of a sling: Its a simple low-status weapon, and in the hands of an expert, it can be devastatingly effective. Video by JD of Tying It All Together

  • what kind of rope should i use and how long should it be ?

  • @SamrauiChamploo02 - I used 3/16 inch solid braid nylon - purchased from my local hardware store (info provided in the vid). 7:23

  • @SamrauiChamploo02 -The rope started out at about 6 feet long.

  • Whats the songs name?

  • @ThorsDiciple - Panoramic - Atticus Ross

  • I expect you are american, it has been truly said that we are two countries/people divided by a common language.......................

  • @suzannesadiiqa - the same [English] man once said, "A well-knotted cravat is the first serious step in a man’s life." What you call a "cravat", we'd call a "fancy scarf", still both of us could probably tie one. *smile*

  • You know, it's been proven that if you work at getting good with one of these, you can send a normal driveway rock sailing into a skull at 90 MPH and kill someone. I wouldn't laugh at our caveman ancestors, especially the ones that can stealthily kill you with just rope and a rock!

  • @lenarita1 If you're using any variant of the Overhand or Figure 8 release, the sling's pouch should come within one or two inches of the ground if you hold your hand at your side. Adding a release knot will provide greater control when firing.

  • @chaz731gunsmith Dacron or Spectra kiteline, though I'd make the pouch separately and add a larger diameter hand-hold. Like most 'primitive' weapons, even very crude versions will work with some practice, but one designed for the ammo you use and sized for the user will be easier to be good with. You can get a LOT of force with a longer sling throwing with a horizontal swing. But properly applied, it takes little force to badly injure or kill a target. Mail pouch, spiked ammo.

  • @TyingItAllTogether The cravat came out of the Crimean War...if memory serves.

  • @TyingItAllTogether So you start the first loop of the pouch @ 2.5'.

The distance between your hand (wrist) at your side & the ground would be the 2.5' measure, the pouch is off the ground. when loaded and hanging from your hand. Length is adjustable by tying the tether loop at different lengths and choking up on the lose end

A finned dart will fly further and more accurately....

As with any projectile weapon, accuracy, accuracy, accuracy. What you don't hit, hits back :)

  • right, so, official review. I made one from paracord, not the ideal material but i was thinking in terms of say, one were lost in the woods and wearing one of those "survival bracelets" that have become so popular. so, dressing the knot wasnt as bad as i thought it would be, about like tying a monkey fist really. the pouch turns out a bit small, but it is just right for a .50 musket ball. because of the stretch i think rocks are a bit under powered for hunting. bottom line, IT WORKS! thanks man!

  • Chaz here again, signed on under wrong name before. outside of my gunsmithing I also run Woad Warrior Outpost. Not dissing you by any means, just wanted to point out that I actually hunt with slings and such. ever see the Balaeric style slings with the two woven strips forming the pouch? it is a tried and true design but a bit more complex. also, the dart sling is called a kestrosphendone and is made differently from the rock sling, may want to point that out. love to see you make one though!

  • a couple of notes; for a quality sling, you want to use a material that has very little elasticity, nylon, has a bit too much give. try hemp. same for the pouch, i noticed several people saying they used t-shirt material, leather would be a much better choice, or, at least, heavy canvas. cut three holes in a triangular pattern on each end and weave the string through it, creating a draw string effect. i do like this design though, nice and simple. plan to try it later today.

  • this was awesome i am dead accurate with this thx

  • thanks! should any consideration be taken regarding a person's height to the length of the sling?
