what i need to know is, at close range (i need to place it 4 feet from the wall). Whats the largest screen i will get at 4 ft? I will be setting up computer work stations that use projectors but the wall will only be 4 feet max from the projector. how large of a screen can i make at that distance?

Depends on the video card for laptop. Most laptops have a short cut for activated additional displays. Its usually activated by holding the function key then pressing the number with the screen like image on it

When I connect it to my laptop, nothing seems to happen. Is this compatible with Windows 7?

YES you can. You would use the yellow composite RCA cable.
