"Lavia" Fode Moussa Camara- Kalla / Yonbo

from BEMANKAN (Everybody is not the same)

recorded in Guinea, Conakry 2006/2007

Kalla - Rhythm played for warriors going to fight. It is to support the brave and strong men who go into combat, as well as praise them for their success and bravery when they come back.

Yonbo - Rhythm played at baptisms, weddings, and all other spontaneous celebrations. Only women perform this dance, though individually, not in a group. They dance solo in the center of a circle, their steps accompanied by a lead drum.

  • Wonderful balafon playing. Thanks for posting this!

  • The finest, clearest, most musical recording of Guinean percussion (and balafon) I've EVER heard...and I've heard a lot. Thank you!
