My final posting of Fox Movietone Newsreel series. In this footage, we can see Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra rehearsing for the British tour under the direction of Eugene Ormandy, at Birmingham Concert Hall. This was Filmed on May 26th, 1949.

Sorry for the poor, distorted (lots of blasting) sound at the end of footage.

  • Hard to believe that Pathe went to so much trouble to post these thousands of clips.

  • Actually, I also have the original un-edited 'raw' footage of this performance, but since it was too long (26 minutes) for YT, I decided to upload this.

  • This is AWESOME! Thank you SO much for posting this!

  • Thanks for the correction. I didn't think the clarinetist in the video looked like McLane, but by the time frame I just assumed it was him. Cioffi was principal clarinetist of the Boston Symphony during the 50's; he was a great player with a beautiful sound. It was a nice fit for the Philly Orch tour.

  • @wilsonjrhighband - Actually this is not McLane. He was ill and unable to go on this tour and Gino Cioffi played the tour.

  • Tabuteau, Kincaid, Schoenbach and McLane-what more can you say?

  • The british flag (Union Jack) and the US flag (Stars and Stripes) associated, three years after the 2nd WW, great symbol for me who was visiting Colleville last summer in Normandy, other symbol with this german componist !!!

    Philippe in Brittany, french Far-West...
