    A 'producer' can complete a track by themselves (chord progression, vocal harmonies, live percussion, possibly some Live drums etc).

    People who can do this like: Jam & Lewis, Teddy Riley, The Neptunes, Darkchild, RedOne, Ryan Leslie etc.

    These cats can complete a project OUTSIDE OF HIP-HOP with or without samples because they have knowledge of music theory.

    All of my favourite Pete Rock & CL smooth tracks are built on pre-existing songs (more arranging than creating from scratch).

    People, before you comment, please research 24 bit recording & why industry professionals use 24 bit recording, before dithering tracks to 16 bit. Google is free for everybody!

    24 bit makes a very big difference when processing vocals, reverbs, various effects & offers the necessary headroom needed for modern mastering levels.

    If u don't care to research these things, then please stop leaving ignorant comments.

    24 bit matters a lot, even for 16 bit CD's.

    Ask ANY studio professional!

    That's a good point you made!....

    But, also consider that the role of a "producer" has changed since Quincy's day.

    There were no plugins or laptops then, so if you wanted drums, bass, or guitar, you HAD TO call in musicians & give them your arrangements with music notation.

    'Most' producers no longer 'have to' do this in 2011 as all sounds are available on a VST, Motif or Fantom!

    So the term "producer" must also be updated to reflect the required workload.

  • @ShynAwkward Actually some of the greatest producers of all time don't complete a track "by themselves." Their talent comes in knowing what a good record needs and how to accomplish it, which can include anything from calling in other instrumentalists, to telling a vocalist how to say certain things, to knowing how to work with engineers for things like mic placement, sound processing.....to arranging, to playing instruments if needbe, etc.

    Example: Quincy Jones.

  • Yes you need that 24 bit or more for actually producing most efficiently all the multiple channels and effects into your final stereo 16bit CD. The degradation of the source material in the mix among others is otherwise simply too large or insufficiant for more complex recordings.

    Like a fool you said "the human ear cant hear better than 16 bit anyway".

    Then please explain why every DAW & sequencer operates at 24 to 64 bit float?

    Who are you to decide what bit rate professionals use?

    Not everybody wants their drums to sound like grimey, early 90's hip-hop you moron.

    The MPC 5000 CANNOT play 24 bit files, it dithers them to 16 bit before playback.

    Stop spreading misinformation, you know nothing about music production.
