Turn up your speakers...people were sleeping, so I had to be quiet while making this video...

This is how to send text messages through an FRS radio walkie talkie using a simple packet program on your computer. Send me a message if you have any question!

Here is what you will need to send and recieve data packet text messages over radio:

A basic FRS/GMRS radio (Midland G-11 Reccomended)

2 Stereo audio cables

(1) 3MM to 1MM phone jack (From Radioshack)

  • actually this type of thing has been done by hasbro, they have this chat now communicator its basically an FRS radio and a digital camera and a computer you can send text messages, can't send pictures but im gonna figger out how to download the pics from the chatnow, also id like to hook up a little FRS radio station and just play music on it, i did that once but just for 1 song but i made an mp3 of it

  • you don't wanna be playing music over the FRS radio, man. that kinda pisses people off, and its very bad for your radio. i use a new program now that allows me to send up to about 800 characters per text message, and it send it in packets rather than sending one character at a time. its ALOT faster!

  • why is it bad for your radio to play music on it, does it eat batteries? ill hook it to a 6VDC wall transformer and i did it at night like at 2 in the morning when everyone was sleeping unless u think there were night owls up watching TV with their FRS radios on they must have heard a hell of a show lol

  • because it burns up the finals radio. those radios are only designed to transmit at about 50% duty cycle. but they are cheap so it doesnt matter to me.

  • You can use easypal for internet.

  • hafd107 do you mind me asking what is a repeater and how does it work, im thinking its like a recorder hooked to a transmitter and receiver and it picks up and record the signal and retransmits it, i would like to hack one of those and see if i can turn it onto a voice recorder

  • burns up the what? finals whats that? and one time i bought a set of these for $14.99 at wal mart so yeah they are pretty cheap but now they are getting expensive b/c the GMRS is integrated into the FRS radios. i dont even have those radios one died on me b/c i was trying to record all the beeps and buzzes it makes for wav files and i accidently fried the main amp and i had a buzzbugg radioshack one that one got stolen by some kid that was having problems with the law

  • Do you have any more information on this? I would be interested in this.

  • could you hook up some sort of music radio station with these things? the sound quality isnt really that bad

  • Yes, my method would be far too slow for streaming video. FRS simply does not have enough bandwidth to support high-speed internet. You could probably find a faster way than AGWPE, but don't expect to exceed dial-up speeds.
