Things have moved on now. Even budget DSLR`s can now take HD video that is as good as camcordes and the picture quality has become much better now as digital technology has gone better. The best thing to do is to buy a good budget DSLR like the canon eos 1100d without a lens and then buy a $250+ lens to put on it. It will take better pics than expensive DSLR with a cheap lens fitted.

its good video,,SLR without dought is better but i think the negative thing about the SLR, not just its excpensive price, the zooming in SLR is verey low, 18-70mm usually, and if you wanna bay lense with high zoom, its gonna cost you alot of money, so i think the best camera is the semi SLR like Kodak EasyShare Z812 IS
or Fujiflim FinePix S1500, they have high zoom,you cant change the lense in these camera but it has 90% of the options that the slr has, and there price in between
