I hacked apart this Yamaha DD-5 so that I could have bigger and more usable pads.

It works with MIDI just fine. I'm using Garage Band as my sequencer and PolyPhontics to map the pads to notes, rather than screwing with the genuinely awful note shifting interface on the unit itself.

  • @Harpo6 No, at least with most keyboards it wont work since they use switches and drum modules use piezo pickups - module listens to click on the input, determines its voltage peak and generates a note with velocity based on this peak. Keyboards usualy determine velocity by measuring time between moments two switches engage. if you are interested in building your own drum module - check out eDrum and MegaDrum DIY projects.

  • could you use a midi keyboard instead of the dd-5?

  • Nice ! looks very sensitive
