Giovanni Boldini was born in Ferrara on the last day of the year in 1842. His father, an artist and art restorer, taught the precocious young man to paint. Boldoni went to Florence to enter the Accademia di Belle Arti when he was 19. That's where he met a lot of his friends, Tuscan realist artists who called themselves the "Macchiaoli." Their influence, plus the influence of Manet, Degas, and Courbet whom he met on an 1867 visit to Paris, did a lot to color his later paintings. He enjoyed Paris so much that he moved there permanently in 1871. His scenes of Paris and sensual portraits of the elegantly dressed women who lived there helped him become one of the top portrait painters of the day. The opening male portrait after the titles is famous Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi. Though Boldini made occasional trips to London, he spent most of his long artistic life in France. Though he eventually grew too blind to paint, he still loved to hang out with the ladies. He didn't marry until he was 86. He died in Paris in 1931 when he was 88 years old. Two years later, Time magazine called him the "Master of Swish." For music, we have Italian composer Antonio Vivaldi's "Flute Concert in G Minor, Op. 10. No. 2."
