Railway Dam (or One Mile Dam) is an Aboriginal Community close to the Darwin (Northern Territory) CBD. The land was returned to Aboriginal people in 1979 after eight years of struggle. In those days the vacant land was of no value because it was surrounded by oil storage tanks. In 1997, the new Darwin Town Plan proposed to remove the oil tanks and build up-market housing overlooking the One Mile Dam, which was shown on the plans as a public park. The oil tanks have now gone and the land has been subdivided. Today David and Mindy Timber and their little community live under threat of eviction - as they have done for the past 13 years.
