  • I think that boy at 3:44 was aiming for the word "pervasive" not persistent... and he oddly seemed to think that "childrens" was plural for children. That woman at the very end was as typically scattered as a number of the other adults in these videos had been who were struggling to express themselves.

  • The "boy at 3:44" attended the Jerusalem Democratic School in Israel: English is not his native language.

The adults aren't trained brilliant rhetoricians, and the interviews were spontaneous - the adults didn't get the questions before and prepared their answers (as it is usual in some cases, with politicians for example)...

  • @kapriole For not having rehearsed or at least have been given the questions before the interview they are extremely articulate for their ages.

  • @Killedkennyagain Indeed.

  • BINGO MY BROTHER!

    You say it!!!

The kids learn because they want to be part of their community.

    No imposition.

    No forcing.

    No punishment.

The desire comes from within, not without, because :

    "We all want to belong."

It's a force of nature, as elemental as breathing and eating. The need to belong.

  • I don't know about Sudbury schools, but at Summerhill, the world's first democratic school, they say they've NEVER had a child leave school not knowing how to read. How many traditional schools can say that? Probably NONE

  • the guy at 0:50 needs some subtitles.

  • @happyquails Hi, I'm Michael Sappir. English actually is my native language but, having grown up in a bilingual home in Israel, my vocabulary has always been a bit quirky. I never thought "childrens" is the non-genitive plural of "child", but *all* speakers have speech errors from time to time (I study linguistics nowadays, btw.) Not sure if "pervasive" is the word I was looking for, but "persistent" wasn't right either (maybe "consistent"?). As Kapriole wrote, this wasn't a written speech...

  • Yeah I didn't learn how to walk from a teacher I just copied people. I think thats how reading would work to. You realize that you need to read to do something you enjoy doing so you learn how to read

  • @davidjuliowang Well said!
