The Greek island Agathonisi Presented by Alessandro Sorbello Productions http://www.alessandrosorbello.com Agathonisi - General Information A tiny island, Agathonisi is quiet and peaceful with only donkeys and roosters to wake you up in the morning, since it is almost traffic free

The islanders live mainly off fishing and the estimated 800 tourists that visit the island every summer. Part of Accommodation Greek Islands http://www.accommodationgreekislands.com

The locals have often gone through hardships because of poverty and isolation, but they are warm and friendly and will try to make you feel at home as soon as you arrive.

History The island was originally called Tragea or Netousa, and got its current name by a priest in the beginning of last century. The word "agathos" means good or gullible, and a common translation is "Island of the Fools" or "Island of the good-hearted".

Agathonisi lies only ten km away from the Turkish coast, and this has had consequences for the tiny island through history. Originally a place for exiles during Roman and Byzantine times and constantly attacked by pirates, Agathonisi did not have a proper community until the 19th century.

Agathonísi (Greek: Αγαθονήσι) is a small island and community (Κοινότητα Αγαθονησίου) located at the northernmost point of the Dodecanese prefecture in Greece. It is surrounded by many smaller islands and is home to two villages; Megálo Chorió, and Mikró Chorió. The Port of Agathonisi is located on Saint George (Agios Georgios) and is the place that you can find the few hotels of Agathonisi.

Agathonisi is another small island which belongs to the Province of Kalymnos and is 36 nautical miles (67 km) east of Patmos, about 2 hours and 30 minutes by boat. The island goes by other names such as the locally preferred name of Gaidaros and the ancient name Tragea.

The highest point on the island is 209 metres above sea level. This peak is located close to Mikri Chorio. The island covers an area of 13.5 km². In the deep blue waters of the Dodecanisa Greece and in the North East of the body of South Sporades, is situated the Agathonisi island, surrounded by other smaller uninhibited islands like Kounelonisi, Katsagani, Neronisi, Strongily, Pitta etc. It's the northest island of Dodecanisa group and it's 8 nautical miles from the Micrasiatian coasts. The length of the island is 7 kilometres from the East to the west, the width 3 kilometres and the length of its coast is about 32 kilometres. The island looks like a donkey, which gallops towards Meandrous river of Asia Minor where its muddy waters reach the eastern coasts of Agathonisi

AGATHONISI is another small island which belongs to the Province of Kalymnos and is 36 nautical miles east of Patmos, about 2 hours and 30 minutes by boat.

It is very near the coast of Asia Minor.

Agathonisi means the fools' island or the island of the good hearted people, so the name alone predisposes the visitor to understand that this is a very peaceful and good-natured island. It is an ideal place to feel secluded and far away from everything and everyone, as indeed you are, since regular boat communication with Patmos is only twice a week.
