@mercyhurstchic It works because a hair dryer, or even a loud Shuussh noise that you make right into the ear of an infant, mimics the sound that the baby was constantly surrounded by in the womb, the mothers circulatory system. It's really loud in there, up to 80-90 decibels, so the quiet is scary and strange for a newborn. It's has to be loud like a hair dryer because the baby's ear drums aren't fully developed yet, so they can't hear as well as we can. Read "The Happiest Baby on the Block."

@SenhorCroft Yeah. The worst thing I think you can do with a newborn is have a completely silent house. They are used to constant noise, constantly being held snug, and motion. Laying them in their silent nursery in a crib is really weird for them. So swaddle them tight, carry them around or put them in a swing, and run the vacuum or some other white noise like that and you will have a happy newborn. "The Happiest Baby on the Block" by Dr. Karp, is a great book! There's youtube videos on it too.
