Thank you for posting Mussorgsky's supreme masterpiece in the genre! Although these songs dealt with Death in a poetic manner, they are not easy to experience. Nelepp's performance is stunning in its expression of the emotional verities of War in a voice that is dramatic, warm, clear and authoritative! Mussorgsky's genius comes alive in Nelepp's faithful interpretation of the composer's progressive and challenging score. An incredible historic rarity...Bravo!

Other than Rímskiy-Kórsakov's changing of the harmonies (they rob the work of much of its bite!!), this is a very fine performance. Yes, Néljepp had quite a voice - pity that his character was at least as evil as his voice was beautiful!! [According to Vishñévskaja, he ruined a lot of people in his days in St. Petersburg, sending enough of them to the GULag. During Khrushchjóv's "rehabilitation", a woman came to see him and spat into his face - a few months afterwards at age 52, he was dead.

Nelepp war ein Schüler von Tomars,und er hat erst im Mariinsky Theater gesungen. In diesem Theater sang auch Ivan Yershov (seit 1895).
