PART FOUR OF FOUR This video discusses into depth to explain the causes of Nikon's flagship speedlight of SB-900 to overheat due to human errors. Enjoy!

Note: We did not know until now, Quantum came out with new Qflash that is designed to use on Canon / Nikon's on-camera hot shoe. For Nikon, it is Quantum Qflash TRIO QF8N and for Canon, it is Quantum Qflash TRIO QF8C. Both flash units requires a Quantum Turbo Charger (battery pack) to operate properly.

  • Generally I'm pleased with the flash. I don't understand why Nikon would offer a professional level flash that overheats. Even with a SD9 I'm always a bit cautious and watch the temperature gauge like driving a car with low radiator fluid. I just purchased a quantum, and have a feeling that the Quantum will be money much better spent than on the Nikon.

  • We just made four videos explaining why it's not Nikon's fault. The SB-900 is just fine; it is just a little sensitive.

  • I have wathced all four videos and I have a SD9 and I use 2850mah rechargables but on occasion my SB900 does over heat.... I see why now.

So, I can see im going to get a quantum to solve the problem.

The cost of duracell or similar prime batteries would bug me , .....The turbo 2x2 is the one to consider ?

Many thanks for your brilliant videos they are great for people like me who try to RTFM but the brain doesn't take it in so A VIDEO PAINTS A THOUSAND WORDS.

  • Yes, Quantum Turbo 2x2 is another option but they are going for $600+, excluding the cable to connect your SB-900 with.

I suggest you to rent the Turbo 2x2 out first and take it out for a spin to see if it suits you well. You can also rent another battery pack, Quantum SC (Slim & Compact), but it has lesser power than the 2x2.

Take them out for a spin.

  • @tamim4ever no, stupid.

  • is this an official Nikon channel ?!

  • @dkhaas1 lol this channel isn't nikon's official channel, silly. your sb-800 is way smaller than sb-900, so, it doesn't require very much power from the batteries. the sb-900 sucks the living crap out of the batteries because it's bigger and uses more power.

  • Sure you could get a quantum to solve the problem, or you could find yourselves some old SB-800's. They are workhorse flashes that are overly sensitive. In my 6 years of using my SB-800's in many situations that require more than 200 flashes per hour, I have never overheated once. And I use rechargeable batteries in my flash and battery pack.

"embarrassing user errors"? Why the shaming, Nikon?

  • Excellent explanations and great videos! Thank you so much!

  • I appreciate this break down of this information. I do read my manual and as stated below sometimes it just doesn't click in the right places. I wish the SB-800 was still available.

  • Thank you very much.

  • Yeah , here in the UK the 2X2 with cable (+£37)and optional shoulder strap (+£22) is £550 .......that must be well over $700.
