"You can't build a community, it's there or it's not"

here are a few quotes from his speech:

"I don't want to be part of anything viral about any community ever, that's just me
a blog is just a tool. If you think a blog is a community then you too are a tool.
you can't build a community it is either there or it's not. You know you have a community if it takes care of itself
YOU are the asset of a community and not the other way around
the best community leaders come out of the community rather than being hired or thrown in
If you cultivate your community like a plant it will grow. If you empower and guide your community, you will lead it.
if you have something to say, if you have a voice, use it, exercise it. Make those connections. You will be a leader before U know it
community is the antithesis of ego. It is inside you but it is not about you"

I completely agree with Chris, it must come from the heart and it does not come for free, it comes after years of passion and sharing. I think you can "build" it though, it is just a question of words. Chris says "cultivate" by sharing regularly amongst other things. I think you can build with passion.

What do you think are the best ways to build your community?

  • "plant your community"

  • What's with this "Anti-Ego" talk?

    This guy is a Zombie.

  • You can't build a community? Of course you can. You do it with care and passion and compassion and attention to detail and listening to what others need and want. It's okay for someone to be CAUSE and to cause things. It's okay for someone to start out wanting to build something, anything and then take the steps to make that happen.

A blog is not a community? They're a community when readers willfully interact with the blogger and with each other. Some blogs accomplish this very effectively.

  • yeah loic you are really terribly fat

  • Interesting perspective.

I would say I am interested in building a movement, if that involves building a community, then so be it.

  • Very interesting.

  • No, you can't build a community. You can build a place for people to come together. You can offer some activities for people to participate in.

Can you build a tree? No, you plant a seed and you add water. It builds itself.

  • The community must fulfill a need or people will not remain active in it. For example, to create a community of developers you have to meet their need for recognition. To create a creative community you must demonstrate effective means of self-promotion.

  • It's easy to build a niche community, but to build the kinds of vibrant and lasting communities that the web needs now we need to be able to build structures quickly, assess them and throw them away if they don't work. We need to be able to do this efficiently and in response to the demands of the emerging community.

It's like building a playground. The best ones are full, the stupidest ones are empty.
