The government says arrests of illegal aliens along the US-Mexico border have increased over the past year. U.S. Department of Homeland Security records show 73 percent more arrests and prosecutions. Officials attribute the higher numbers to an effort they call Operation Streamline. Authorities charge illegal entrants with a misdemeanor crime, prosecute them and sent to jail. The program began in the U.S. Border Patrol's Del Rio sector in the southwestern U.S. state of Texas more than two years ago and is being expanded to other areas of the three thousand kilometer border. As VOA's Greg Flakus reports from Del Rio, agents say it works.
If they don't see them they can't arrest them I guess.

We're a bit skeptical. There is an Bush Admin active campaign to convey an impression of effective border security to the US public, in hopes that public anger will subside just enough to allow a massive amnesty to be passed in Congress. The facts are that roadblock after roadblock (e.g., claimed "environmental" issues or disruption of ranches along the border) have been raised to thwart completion of the border fence. And didn't let the Nat'l Guard deployment at the border lapse this year?
