Maybe, I am not sure. Its been many years since I read that simile at a computers magazine. And I remember that the speed they said was about the actual speed of a plane. 800km/h is a common speed for a civilian plane. 80Km/h aren't even enough to keep it on the air... It is going to stall at that speed.

@babylonxgr 80km/h, not 800...

Imagine an airplane flying with 800 Km/h at a distance of a few milimeters from the ground. Now you have a clue of how fast and near to the plate a disk head flies. You can also imagine what big trouble the smallest unseen piece of dust can do to your disk. Thats why you should never open a disk outside a clean room if you are intrested for its data. At this point you are damn lucky if you are able to recover all your important data.

It CAN and WILL die in this condition. If you open a hard drive, it will probably run for a couple of minutes/hours, but after that, the dust does the "dirty work" and eventually the drive will fail.
Hard drive recovery technicians use a cleanroom for a reason!

well if theres dust it will die faster, and if you open it it works, but it will have a shorter life period.
