Violet comes back, finally ready to be with Pete and Lucas only to see that Pete has moved on while she's been away (or trying to, I don't believe at all that Addie and Pete will last, she's still in love with Sam and he's still in love with Violet).

@Titona90 they start a friends with benefits thing in the middle of the season, but both are aware that the other is in love with someone else, Pete with Violet and Addison with Sam, still they try to make it a real realtionship, but they were kidding themselves.

@chiabee14 I'm not saying Pete didn't suffer, he did, but being a bystander, even one romantically involved with the victim, his pain could never surpass the one of the victim. Violet did not only have the attack itself, which was horrible, but also the pain of not being able to bond with her own child, the pain that came with giving said child up, and of course the other psycological scars left by what Katie did to her. And since you don't know about Charlotte, u obviously haven't seen season 4

@mkitten13 I don't remember exactly what happened to Charlotte, but I think that Pete and Violet's pain is different, Violet's is more evident, while Pete's is silent and deeper... Dunno, maybe is just my impression :)
