Someday You'll be Sorry - New Vancouver Hot Five 2001

When our daughter Riette phoned us yesterday she told me that she had started guitar lessons. Her husband Dan had acquired a tuba and has taken lessons as well. Their question was if I had any recorded jazz with both these instruments. My mind went back to 2001 when I had organized a session to try a bit of a different sound. We came together for a morning sessions and I recorded some 7 tunes with sousaphone, two accoustic guitars and a frontline of clarinet and cornet.
I listened to these tunes again, then emailed these to the Riette and Dan and thought why not put one of these on youtube. No film this time, just sound and the one picture we made in Lloyds garden during a break. I had not heard these tunes for a few years. Good memories!
Simon Stribling sousaphone, Don Ogilvie guitar, Dick Lazenby 4 string tenor guitar, Lloyd Arntzen clarinet and Bob Erwig cornet

  • Great job, played a good tempo and lots of feeling, thanks. Sort of had that Bix tone and great guitar.

  • Thank you, Don Ogilivie has been my favourite guitarist. and only when they can create the right feeling you can try to play like Bix. Thanks for your nice reaction

  • I like the fact that the "Hot Five" part of the title can refer both to Louis' ditto and to the Quintette of the Hot Club. Is that a Macaferri (?spelling?) guitar?

Lovely stuff. Is there anything Simon Stribling doesn't play? Another great Aussie jazzman!

  • This is really great relaxed jazz.Beautifully played.Just what I needed today.Congratualtions to yu all.Wonderful music.

  • Really missed all of your Climax, DSC, Vanc Hot 5, etc. What happened? Hope I can retrieve these fabulous videos. This is one of Louis' best tunes - I learned it 40 years ago off his origl chart in the New Orleans Jazz museum.

    Many happy returns Bob. Ian
