11 members of the Tibetan Youth Congress staged an aggressive demonstration at the Chinese Embassy in New Delhi at around 2:30 pm today to protest the intensified repression in Tibet since the March Uprising inside Tibet.

After the forceful protest near the Chinese Embassy for half an hour, all the members have been detained at the Chankyapuri Police Station. The members chained themselves to the pole near the embassy to prolong their protest. They raised slogans demanding the Chinese government to 'Quit Tibet". An attempt to hang a banner was foiled by the police who tore the banner apart.

So far, the cases registered against our members are not known. Among the 11 members today were TYC Joint Secretary Tenzin Norsang and members of RTYC Delhi Rohini, Samyeling, Herbertpur and Dharamshala.

The protest was staged one day after the conclusion of the Beijing Olympics 2008 to remind the world that Tibet continues to remain under the brutal colonial occupation of the Chinese government that has perpetrated continuing violence against the Tibetan people with impunity.

As the Beijing 2008 Olympics was concluded at the Birds Nest (Cage) Stadium, the words of the IOC officials who claimed that bringing the Olympics to China will improve the human rights situation inside China must be examined and the IOC must be held accountable for the promises that have not been delivered. The IOC must not be allowed to walk away by committing moral violence and violating the rights of the Olympic athletes and citizens who were hampered from staging protests at the Beijing Olympics. A committee should be set up to examine the IOC and the numerous violations of the Olympics Charter made by the present IOC, including whether the IOC functions independently as a sports body or is being influenced by outside factors.

The Olympics is over, but the Tibetan Movement will continue to reach greater heights. TYC reaffirms its demand for the complete independence of Tibet as the ultimate aspiration of the 6 million Tibetans and pledges to sacrifice whatever our struggle may take of us.
