This is a little video I took of Liam while I interviewed him. If he has to think about words he struggles with them and stutters. He's over 4½ years old, and he is my first stutterer.

In researching I found that this is probably what is called "Normal Disfluency".

The normally disfluent child occasionally repeats syllables or words once or twice, li-li-like this. Disfluencies may also include hesitancies and the use of fillers such as "uh", "er", "um".

Disfluencies occur most often between ages one and one-half and five years, and they tend to come and go. They are usually signs that a child is learning to use language in new ways. If disfluencies disappear for several weeks, then return, the child may just be going through another stage of learning.

It's also possible that is could be worse than what we are thinking. We will be getting it checked out soon, but we are giving others a chance to see Liam's Stutter as it is now.

  • Sorry about the bad video. I don't know what happened to it. I think it was messed up in YouTubes changes or something. It was perfect before. :(

  • We've actually seen an improvement in his stuttering, meaning it is lessening. I am still worried it could become permenant, but if it isn't gone within a year then I will know it is permentant.

Right now the doctors aren't concerned. I'm hoping to get a new video up of his current speech soon.

  • aww what a sweet heart hes adorable my 6 year old nephew has a very bad stammer and sometimes he ends up in tears coz he cant get the words out but a lot of love and patince helps bless your little one i wish him well

  • A lot of kids stutter between the age of 2 and 5, and males are four times more likely to stutter. I stutter some (I use fillers a lot, and repeat words, or two words), and have been made fun of, but I have been able to improve it a lot. Kids would be real mean to me, but I am OK now. He likely is very smart, and intelligent, stuttering has nothing to do with intelligent. People need to understand before they make fun of people. I had a teacher mock me, and that is extremely disappointing.

  • I know someone who's sounds at the beginning of their words get stuck as they try to say thhhhhhem

and someone else who repeats the s-s-sound at beginning of their words
