[Harry] Yerkes Novelty Five: Easy Pickin's
Columbia A-6116 (Mx. No.: 49637-2)

New York, June 2, 1919

Personnel: Alcide Nunez (cl), Ross Gorman (as), Ted Fio Rito (p), Arthur Lange (bj), George H. Green (xyl), Joe Green (dr)

At the time of this recording, clarinet player Alcide Nunez was the Louisiana Five's lead musician, who contributed much to the band's distinctive sound. He was also one of the earliest American jazz musicians who directly influenced a German jazz pioneer: Listen carefully to Eric Borchard's first recordings (1920 / 21)!

  • Pleasant recording, thanks for sharing it. Interesting about Nunez's influence on Borchard. That said, I don't think Nunez is on this recording. I believe he joined Yerkes at the start of calendar year 1920 (in part lured by his New Orleans colleague trombonist Tom Brown).

  • I always like this kind of very early jazz recordings. Veaudeville, ragtime and some blue notes.
