Played sting style with the thumb even though he has played this song with a pick in tha past. this bass line is the album version bass line and i've never heard him play this exact bass line (the verse part with the 16th note up/down pattern) live but only once durring a couple bars in on their 2007 tour. i have a theory that he can't play this bass line live and sing. go ahead, please... proove my theory wrong! that would also be a reason why they have RARELY ever played it.

This is my yamaha BB3000A7 fretless bass. It's rarely picked up, I know it's a shame, but it sounds great on this song. Spirits is a tricky song at first, but once you get it, it's a FUN song to play.

  • I have an old Ibanez fretless. I learned to play double bass in school orchestra so the transition was very easy. I like your video because over 30 years ago, I used to play along with this very piece. I appreciate your post more than i can express. You Rock. I see the music in your face.

  • @suddenseer AWW thanks bro! music is my life! :D

  • I don't think it's a theory...others thinks that Sting plays an easyer line live in concerts, because he can't sing and play that at the same time! I think it too!

  • haha nice! so i'm not alone!

  • Awesome job man, I enjoy watching your videos , I am a guitar player of 30 years but always wanted to learn to play bass. What amp are you running through?

  • thanks! i tour with just a david eden 4X10 xlt cab and use their WT500 head. i used to have the monster rig, but i love my condensed version. david eden is the best bass stuff second only to aguilar in my opinion.

  • very nice! thank you

  • tight pimp, niiiiice, im 38 and they used to show this on MTV all the time, even then I thought the bass line was phat, now im a drummer so I used to play this loud and proud in my basement, but I give it to ya, U are feelin' it... great playin.

  • I liked how you are tapping your foot on the upbeat in the beginning of the song and later change to tapping on the downbeat.

If it wasn't for Stewart Copeland the Police wouldn't amount to much.

As a bass player I always feel that the drummer does the work of setting up the right pulse and the bass player complements and fills around the drums...

    Anyway nice work!

  • Wow, very good!!!!!

  • that was tight bro!

  • I didn't know playing in a cover band,on a rotation of local bars throughout Kansas was considered "touring". That's interesting. I lived in Europe for 2yrs and asia for 1...touring.

Btw...(in my opinion)you spent way too much money on that David Eden to get that little of a quality sound. Good sound doesn't always come at a price tag. Ampeg Classic Svt,Warwick bass,DR Strings and Pyle 4x10's. That's what I use and it out classes them all.
