One more note about Victoria's appearance: she was very short and curvaceous to begin with, so after nine children in 17 years, her waist just disappeared. Then Albert died and all motivation to look beautiful for someone was gone forever. The smooth shoulders and generous bustline she had been so proud of were covered up, and only her voice was still as pretty as it had been when she was a newly-crowned 18 year old.

@EnjoyTheMusic242 I think 'whiny' and 'grumpy' are the words that best suit Queen Victoria's personality.

@EricBree1978 ...personal ideas on women's rights were. She may indeed, as you said, have had particular views on women's rights and their role in life. I'll admit that I didn't know that, but she WAS stubborn in her views on marriage, and what I meant to say was that her ideas seem to be very femenist-like. It was basically just the word which most suited what I meant.

@EricBree1978 Okay, so maybe 'femenist' was the wrong word to use. However, I meant to stress that Victoria WAS stubborn and independent and was afraid of being dictated to, largely because of her upbringing in which she was ordered around in everything she did. In adulthood, she didn't want to rely on or be inferior to anybody in general, & not wanting to marry Albert was probably an extension of that. She didn't want to give in to these fears of ownership, no matter what her...

@EnjoyTheMusic242 I highly doubt Victoria was a feminist. Just in case you didn't know, she was against women's right to vote. In 1870 she wrote 'Let women be what God intended, a helpmate for man, but with totally different duties and vocations'. Is that what you call a feminist?

@EricBree1978 But she didn't. She caved. You could say under pressure from her people and government, but given that we know she really loved him, I like to think it was in part motivated by affection. Perhaps Victoria realised that if she HAD to marry, it could very well have been to someone she hugely disliked, and marrying Albert was the best choice, because at least she had love for him. Sorry, rambled a bit there :)

@EricBree1978 ...she saw it as a way for a woman to be 'controlled' by a man, especially a Queen. The government even admitted that they thought a marriage would 'tame and domesticate' her, because they thought she was too feisty. She obviously took offence to this. Who wouldn't? But she did fall in love with Albert, and despite her views on marriage, she did ask him to marry her. She didn't have to. She was Queen. She could have done whatever she liked, and rejected a marriage like Elizabeth I.
