Al Hauff flew air shows in his homebuilt Pitts Special from 1976 to 1985. He held the Canadian Unlmited Aerobatic title in 76-77. The photography in this video was shot from a hot air balloon in 1981 near Guelph, Ontario. The video was compiled on 1 inch tape at the University of Guelph.

  • Great aeroplane, wonderful flying...I once flew a Pitts about 25 years ago, will never forget it. Thanks for a outstanding video and flying skills.

  • @nocrap62

Your right about the quality but that is all we had to work with then. Also the music from "Cats" was real cool in 1981.

  • Fantastic aerobatics 10/10 the first video where the Pitts Special is shown what it can do great work to you Sir also what is the music that you used?

I have a Rc Pitts Special which has a smoke system 120 size which I will be practicing this routine to my home crowd.

    Thank You

  • @stan230 The music is from "Cats". Good luck with doing the routine with a radio controlled model because I know I have to be in an airplane to keep oriented. I admire you guys who can do it from outside the aircraft.

  • As a future Pitts pilot i would love to know how you did the maneuver at 6:20, Or is it a trade secret ;)

  • @SZPkid Ths is not a trade secret but it is essential to understand flat spinning and the gyroscopic forces present before attempting this maneuver. Once you have mastered INVERTED (Do not practice this right side up) flat spin entry, sustaining flat spinning and executing cotrolled recovery, then you are ready to try this maneuver. Start 10,000 AGL and bail out if recovery is not executed by 2000 feet. I am serious about this!

  • @SZPkid Another thing about flat spins. While in a flat spin you will stay at full power and recovery with power off (the only way to get out). You nose should stay about 10 degrees above the horizon in a sustained flat spin and your flight controls will produce no reaction at all. You can prove this by starting with lots of altitude. As soon as you pull power the nose will drop and you will be in a normal inverted spin from which recovery is standard. ALWAYS PRACTICE FLAT SPINNING INVERTED!
