These are the beta, placeholder names Nintendo used in US promotions before the official Pokémon names were decided for Pokémon Red and Blue. I missed a few, but I couldn't find pictures for those, they are Att (Kabuto), Ptera (Aerodactyl) amongst others.

Interestingly of note the names were restricted to a seven character limit, perhaps suggesting that the developers had not differentiated the 7 character Trainer name limit with the 10 character Pokémon name limit in that point of the games' localization process where previously a global 5 character limit was used for Red/Green and Japanese Blue.

The music chosen is the unused legendary beasts theme from Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire (thanks gamma3adhexius)

  • Theres a copy of red i believe that was found (theres a vid up on here) where pidgey comes up as pidge.

  • @Themaniacnextdoor Yes, it's actually a clip from a 1999 promotional VHS of "Target - Get Into the Game" It's also uploaded on Youtube under "Part 5".

  • I remember looking at the Pokemon Red/Blue promotional tape that show a sneak preview of the english version of Season 1 of Pokemon, They actually show the beta name for Pidgey, Pidge.

  • @HyperSonicXtreme Yes, blastoise4049 recently uploaded footage of that. What I find interesting about it is that it is that the battle actually showed "A wild PIDGE appeared" too, with a prefix in a similar trend to "The (TRAINERCLASS) wants to fight!" screenshots.

  • It's sad what Cubone's name was going to be..... If you think so too, please reply to this comment.

  • @awedef his name is supposed to be an anagram of SNES, the system earthbound was played on.

  • I wish Clefairy and her evolved form kept their prototype names.

  • Ha :) seen all these before, still made me giggle

  • I like names for Koffing and Weezing (NY, and LA)Perhaps in reference to the polution of New York and Los Angeles?

  • I can understand Arbo, since it WAS the Japanese name. Why did they change it again? Ekans isn't very clever. YES, I KNOW IT'S "SNAKE" SPELLED BACKWARDS!
