  • Guys give him a break! It was a top down fire all your fuel was there so you did not have to add more splits. Just because the starter was added to the bottom does not disqualify it! Well done! I use this method in my wood stove! It is proven to be cleaner, hotter with less smoke. It also saves time because you don't have to fiddle with it! Do try using news paper tyed in knots instead of fire starter!

  • this is the worst example of a top down fire ever. A top down fire with a fire starter in the bottom does not qualify as a top down fire. You probably would have been fine with out the fire starter.

  • you say top down fire...then you went and put ignition source in the bottom....hence, NOT a top down fire. build layers, large to small (bottom to top), put combustion source in TOP w/smallest kindling. produces very little smoke and does not need to be closely tended.
