@Ruk8mini Also see 'huddersfield town chants' by im4evermcfc
Those were the days my friend/We thought they'd never end/ We won the league 3 times in a row/ We won the FA Cup/And now we're going up/We are the town/Oh yes we are the town....
If only Boris knew of his contribution to culture!!

@Ruk8mini Thank you my friend. It was not known in our country until 1969. There were a few different football versions at the time. Today only Ipswich and Huddersfield fans use the chant. see geoffhudd TOWNSONGS on youtube. I will see if Alexandr Vertinskiy is acknowledged for his contribution in a forthcoming pub quizz.

@penrhyndeundraeth It is not a folk song or gypsy song - the composer is Boris Fomin (1900-1948). The song was written in the beginnig of 20ths last century for professional Russian singers like Alexandr Vertinskiy, for example. The folk variant is just one of many interpretations of this nice melody. And for my taste is not the best one.

One of a number of Russian folk songs exploited by the British pop market. Dorogoi Dlinnoyu=The Road Is Long. Mary Hopkin had a UK hit in 69 Those Were The Days My Friend. Of course it has gone the rounds of football grounds in English football league as a variety of chants depending on which team you support.
