Here's another train caught by accident on the CN Joliet Subdivision. While driving back from a friend's house in Downers Grove, I saw black smoke coming from the tracks while crossing the Lemont Road Bridge. I turned onto New Avenue to see what was up and came across this Loram Rail Grinder, a train dedicated to keeping the rails in good shape. I recall seeing this exact train sitting in CN's Markham Yard out in Homewood on the CN Chicago Subdivision. The train consists of a huge unit with specially shaped wheels and grinding stones, two tank cars loaded with water, two crew coaches, and a caboose equipped with a water cannon to extinguish stray sparks. Unfortunately, I didn't get to see it in action despite the 40 minutes I hung around. I had to do these drive by shots since there was no place to set up the camera and because I didn't want to leave my vehicle unattended to long on the side of the road where several dump trucks were speeding by.

I hope you enjoy the stuff I got here. I wish I could have gotten some some better quality footage.

  • *** Part II ***

Before Internet-Hate-Club-Kiddies (tm) start their squeaking about prejudices & discrimination .... can it. No ones interested in your whining. Good people, each with a flag patch or similar design somewhere on body or uniform, fought & died so YOU can practice your 1st-Amendment rights. The VERY least you can do is not disrespect their purpose & beliefs by worshiping a Mexican flag, usually clueless to meanings & stories behind each color & section of Old Glory.

@carlisle1926 .... 100% agree. I'm sick of seeing the thing painted on every flat surface in OUR country. I don't give a da#n what they do with it in Mexico, nor what Mexican-Americans do with it on THEIR structures, land, & owned stuff. But I DO expect them to respect the U.S. flag over any other, if they choose to live here & be fellow citizens. It's red, white, blue, 50 stars, 13 stripes, often called "Old Glory" ...... & hasn't a speck of green anywhere on it.

  • this exact unit was out grinding CSX's ex Conrail water level route about 2 yrs ago.

  • i just saw one 4 the fist and at 9:45

  • This train came from hell?

  • @carlisle1926

It is what it is. and yes, some CP Rail units have the US and Canadian flag on them.

A train designed by a madman and cast in the ingots of hellfire and brimstone.

  • Why does everything I see lately have to have a mexican Flag on it? Take note of the US FLAG on one end and the mexican flag on the other. I'm sick of it. I'm down in Texas and I wonder--Do they fly the US flag everywhere in Canada?

  • one of LORAM's rail grinders went on the NS B and H-Lines and set a wild fire and had the highway shut down. Luckily the mixed freights for NS on that line (Many Fuel Tankers) were done for the day and resting in Vardo to make the long trek to Harrisburg,PA and beyond

  • i saw rail griender that looked just like this about a year ago in russel kentucky
