Andy Kaufman was on the dating game in the 70's and did this great bit based on a rhetorical question. The potential date asks him if she were Santa and he sat on her lap what would he ask for. Hilarious!

Andy Kaufman wasn't a comedian, and he'd be the first to say so. He was a performance artist, and that is essentially a way to fuck with people's minds while acting out in esoteric ways. Some performance artists do it for the fun, others because they like to play with people's heads, others because they like to learn how people tick, and others because they want to convey a message. They are highly underrated. Next time you see one just let go of your inhibitions and enjoy the experience.

The only problem with your statement of how he isn't a comedian. By connotation no he wasn't a comedian, but a "performance artist" is just a way to generalize a performance by an artist. Comedy basically means a positive ending. No matter what he did, it always ended with the audience laughing, him, or both. So a positive ending. His only tragedy was his death. So yeah, he was a comedian. He just didn't like the stigma applied to a comedian.

simply because he was a "performance artist." At a certain point, he's the dumbass when his contrived idiocy is exposed. The audience no longer gives a damn if he's a genuine idiot or if he's imitating one.

So if Kaufman appears on a dating program such as this, and the protocol is for the girl to ask questions and receive more or less genuine answers, and he does it his own way...then it seems to be the "world according to Andy." One man becomes bigger than the programming simply because he's viewed amongst his fans as a "genius" for fucking with people and making them look like dumbasses for "not getting it." He's okay for a short while, but then it becomes an insult to one's intelligence

I'd know, I really don't see how he was any type of artist, other than an actor/comedian. I don't think there's really anything grand going on. I do however think he is talented, funny and adorable.
