I think that this improvisation should be judged without watching who is playing, only listening to the music. It's one improvisation made by three organists, I don't think they are playing three different improvisations, in my opinion the result has a sense of unity that produces a single work, not three different works.

What hapened with the button?

The last one is the one that brings something new to the theme and flow. This is playing like a tennis game and he hit the ball with absolute accuracy but makes it his game. He did not try to impersonate Latry but to respond to him. That is a valid choice in my opinion...

Looks like Oliver is laughing as he comes around to pick up the broken toe piston.

What makes Latry the top is those awesome rythms.

Mediocre?:O I dont think so...he has an other style.

No fussed on the full Notre Dame organ sound - those reeds sound too harsh I think.
I actually prefer the third part of the improv to the others. Pálúr reduces the tension initially, whilst continuing the overall ebb and flow of the previous parts of the improv, then builds on it to form a fitting and cohesive end.

1.00 great!!

@joernbroeker one of the toe pistons falls off.
Latry excellent, Fassang very very good but the impro of the last one is really mediocre!

I think one cannot compare the musical quality of these productions objectively. The third improvisation is just a different style, admittably jarring from the first two, but hence it has to be evaluated in another way.

I accidentally removed starblazer1971's comment instead of replying to it, but I could recover it, so here it is:
The third organist totally lost the style of the improvisation, taking the primal energy of the first two and introducing Alberti figures. It would be interesting to hear M. Latry's critique of the students' performance.

And my answer:
IMHO the figuration you mention is not simple Alberti bass, but instead has melodic importance. It is clearly a bit different in style, but varietas delectat, and it contributes to the structure of the impro and brings a bit of calmdown.

Not exactly tape, rather digital camera, but indeed; I am very grateful to Mr. Fassang & Pálúr for giving us the occassion. And it's amusing too!
