Charted at #14 on UK Singles chart in January 1961. Based on the William Tell Overture. The name of this group comes from the Piltdown hoax which garnered many headlines in the 1950's when it was exposed. The group itself was a studio one assembled by the Four Preps. Although this single didn't chart nationally on the Billboard Hot 100, it did chart locally in several cities, including Rochester, New York, (in the top 15), Los Angeles, California (in the top 40), Indianapolis, Indiana (top 40), Flint, Michigan (top 40), San Antonio, Texas (top 40) and Fort Wayne, Indiana (top 40).
Original Billboard review: "The "William Tell Overture," or part of it anyway, is handed a wild reading by the Piltdown Men here."
Released as a single in the US in October 1960.
Written by Ed Cobb & Lincoln Mayorga.
B-side is "Labrea Pits".
Really gets you moving! Quite the production! Many thanks for the details in your description and a great cover photo!
