This floating one-stop shop is named Triveni. It's the initiative of Consumerfed, the Kerala State Co-operative Consumers Federation Ltd.
With shelf space of around 1,000 square feet, it has plenty of room to serve the needs of the locals. And there are at least one million of them here in this area.
[Reiji Nair, Managing Director Consumerfed]: "There are more than a million people residing in this area, in the backwaters. Most of the places they have no road access. They are denied of many facilities. They have to go to town and spend a lot of money."
The floating store opens at 8 in the morning and closes at 6 in the evening. Local residents are happy with the new service as it will save them time and money.
[Shanti Anil Kumar, Local Resident]: "Earlier we islanders had to travel to far off places to get our stores but now it will be a relief and helpful for people like us living here."
And to help the not so well off 'Triveni' is offering a 2 to 3 per cent discounts on all stock.
[Ratish Babu, Local Resident]: "It will really be helpful for the general public like us living in remote areas and we will also be getting good quality with better or cheaper prices and I think this will be a big attraction for the poor people."
The store is set up with the Internet and is powered by solar energy and plans to visit at least 50 locations everyday.
