Acid throwing or vitriolage is a form of violent assault. Perpetrators of these attacks throw acid at their victims (usually at their faces), burning them, causing skin tissue to melt, often exposing bones below the flesh and sometimes even dissolving the bones. The consequences of these attacks include permanent scarring of the face, body and blindness. These attacks are common in Cambodia, Afganistan, India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and other Asian countries. According to Taru Bahl and M.H. Syed 80% of victims of these acid attack are female and almost 40% are under 18 years of age.
