it's a myth that 8-12 reps is the most effectif repetition range to hypertrophy muscles.
most of the people should train their legs with sets of 20 reps, whereas other should use the 5*5 to get bigger ;-)

A good place to start is with three sets of 8-12. Once you can perform 12 repetitions, increase the amount of weight you use and start back at the 8 rep range.
