deflagrating mixture of potassium chlorate and table sugar

Nice experiment to demonstrate the effect of a strong oxidizer on a reducing agent. The potassium chlorate will accept electrons (oxidezer) from the sucrose (reducing agent). The reaction products are: CO2, H2O, and KCl. This is one of the few chemical reactions that will not run under a equalibrium.

20 KClO3 + 2 C12H22O6 ---) 24 CO2 + 22 H2O + 20 KCl + O2

(ratio: 7/3)
